Research Group on States, Nations & Sovereignties (GRENS) & Francoist regionalism from Catalonia: centripetal practices & discourses (PID2021-125227NB-I00)

The book by Nicolás Sesma, lecturer at the University of Grenoble-Alpes, has been presented as the history of the Franco dictatorship written by and for a new generation. The impact has been immediate both in terms of media attention and the favor of the public who, far from being frightened by the almost 760 pages of text and critical apparatus, has responded positively and has already allowed a double reprint. The book weaves together a synthesis of the research accumulated over the last decades with an own and unique analysis, the result of the author’s own research and the position of an international training with, finally, a worked and attractive style that, without renouncing to the disciplinary requirement, he peppers the narrative with contemporary analogies, historical anecdotes, and twists not without irony.

To put so many praises to the test, we propose a different and original presentation that, based on personal and professional complicity, plays with the idea of the ‘roast battle’. Thus, we have asked four renowned specialists to do a critical reading of the book from their area of expertise. Each intervention will respond to three points: which shortcomings have been detected, which successes and which two questions would pose to the author. All in all, in the presence of the Sesma himself who, in turn, will have the right of reply to give continuity to the debate… and to the battle of opinions open to all audiences.
